“Right now a team of Navy SEALs is fighting for their lives in the streets of Brooklyn to protect a physicist and a Marine who may be able to stop what’s about to come down on all of your heads,” Joe Thomas said sincerely as he stood before a window that revealed the skyline of New York City. “What they don’t know, is that this has to be a team effort.”
Richard folded his hands together and nodded, having finally accepted that Joe Thomas was indeed who the man had been saying he was.
“What is your interest exactly, in stopping this?”
“Fair question. Think about it, Doctor. Humanity is at the apex of its avarice. You have an unquenchable appetite for the murder and torture of one another. You think only of yourselves and your tiny little corner of the cosmos. I have souls falling into fire like raindrops in the great flood. These are high times for me, I am like a pig in shit. And you want me to give all of that up?”
“It has to end sometime, doesn’t it?”
“Not today!” Joe Thomas snapped, almost spilling his second Old Fashioned of the night. “I need more time! I just… I need more time.”
“Ah,” Richard said simply as he leaned back in his chair and smiled. “We aren’t the only ones who are going to be called to account.”
“Richard, are you honestly going to meet the revelation that my actions are based on self-interest with surprise? After all, I am the poster boy for self-interest, and does it really matter? In this case, our interests are intertwined. Your idiotic ‘favored’ species has yet another shot at redemption, but only if you choose to take it.”
Joe Thomas had said ‘you’ in a way that seemed to indicate Richard himself, directly.
“Me?” Doctor Wilburn asked, pointing at himself. “What does this have to do with me?”
“You’re the least likely person I could find to take on this task, and therefore your sacrifice will be the most meaningful.”
Doctor Wilburn jumped up from his chair.
“My sacrifice?”
“Yes, my good Doctor. You are going to have to sacrifice yourself to cleanse mankind of its sins.”
